AUBREY AUTOMOBILES

Restoring the soul (of vintage cars)

Words by Carolina Saporiti

A British company run by women, is working in close touch with its clients in order to entrust to the future the icons of times past.

For Georgia Peck, restoring signifies adjusting the soul – along with the body – of an object. It means adding value to what already exists. Peck hails from England, having grown up on the border between Kent and East Sussex, in the southern part of the United Kingdom. She spent her childhood among historic and beautiful automobiles and after having worked for ten years in the luxury sector and in the car industry, she decided to employ her own talents to consign to the future cars with a history and a soul. She founded Aubrey Automobiles, a company specialised in the restoration and the modification of iconic vintage cars, and, in the meantime, she has also been setting up Aubrey Peck, a company specialised in the organisation of events and experiences such as meets, product launches and guided tours, both for private as well as for commercial clients, all over the world.

At the end of February, Aubrey presented her first work to an international public, at the Concours of Elegance in St. Moritz: the restoration of the 1973 Land Rover Series III 109. The historical soul of the car had been maintained by a restoration project that had been meticulously carried out. The future had also been integrated into it with modern improvements and innovative design solutions. Georgia Peck underlines the importance she attaches to the fact that the identity of a model or a brand is never altered and that, if anything, it is further preserved in order to render its beauty “immortal”. Artisans and engineers have been working on this, her first restoration project – entitled Aubrey 001 – for eight months and a total of approximately one thousand hours.

The Land Rover Series III belongs to a British family who had always used the car for farming purposes and that had wanted to give it a new lease of life requesting that it be “customised” to live in the Swiss Alps. The restoration work has made the car better suited to the climatic conditions of that particular region, from winter snow to summer sun. The family asked that the active and adventurous lifestyle of its members was firmly taken into account in its restoration. So, Aubrey 001 has been provided with three different roof configurations, a ski rack and a custom-made bicycle rack, a small cabinet for drinks and a baggage holder.

001 has undergone a complete restoration process including the car body – painted in a shade of orange, an original 1970’s detail – and an updated power steering system as well as the complete reconstruction of the engine and the gears. The car has been equipped with new brakes and suspensions and a new zinc chassis. The six seats in Connolly leather are heated while the inside of the car is in wengé wood. The car possesses an Apple CarPlay system and modern yet discreet loudspeakers. As you can see, nothing has been left to chance. Aubrey works side by side with the client throughout each part of the process so as not to neglect any tiny detail and to meet all of the requests the client has made.

In this same spirit, Aubrey is already working on a new project, a 1988 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon 280GE SWB. It is working on bringing it back to life in a better condition than before yet still preserving the soul of the vehicle. This is because restoration is a form of investment. Not only does it “take care of” an object but it treats it accordingly and it represents an opportunity to enjoy it in the years to come.
