Issue IV

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

ABSURD, SURREALISM, TROMPE L’OEIL

Which literary epic could not be more suited to this Orlando, our most absurd issue? Alice in Wonderland, of course!

This issue is guided by the theme of Surrealism, of trompe l’oeil, of illusion. We are publishing, for the first time, a tale which is a continuation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, beyond the famed looking-glass, and illustrated in the Editorial by magical photographs taken in The Scarzuola, an extraordinary place, a Dream made out of Stone and created by the designer and constructor Tomaso Buzzi.

We have had the exclusive opportunity to interview Maurizio Cattelan, as no one before had ever had the chance to do. With Maurizio, we have created and produced the Orlando scarf that you can see also on the front cover. It’s a limited edition of two hundred scarves, being part of the project Museums League, Made in Catteland. Cattelan made this collaboration with Museums for the ultras of art who wanted to have a supporter scarf for their favorite museum, like for their favorite football team. Orlando is a Museum sui generis and this is our Scarf that you can’t miss!

In this issue, we have commissioned to some of the most fascinating artists of our times, special artworks only for us. Annie Atkins, the graphic designer who has turned the world of Wes Anderson into something that we have all learnt to love, has created for Orlando the Toothsoap, offered in our imaginary  Hotel Toiletries. The British illustrator inspired by medieval iconography, Fee Greening,  has prepared a singular treat for the readers of Orlando: on the bed in your imaginary suite you’ll find a special Bed-time Story that she has illustrated for you.

Through this surreal issue we will tell you about the trompe l’oeil dishes by the Swiss chef, Marie Robert, the artistic musical scores of the Passion selon Sade by Sylvano Bussotti, the amusing Calligrammes, the surrealist works by the British artist Fiona Banner and the interview with Barnaba Fornasetti.
