Issue VI
THE ONE THOUSANDS AND ONE NIGHTS
META-NARRATION
You can’t imagine the joy I feel, in this issue, at being able to share with you a theme that is so dear to me: Meta-Narration! It’s a narrative technique that consists in the direct intervention of the authors inside the same piece of writing that they are creating. This action produces a narrative that assumes as its very own objective the actual act of telling a story, a game of Chinese boxes with a story interlaced with another story, in a sort of narrative labyrinth that will leave nobody indifferent to it.
A few examples of this brilliant technique are, in literature: the Odyssey, The Canterbury Tales, The One Thousand and One Nights, the Tristram Shandy, the Pasolini Trilogy; in art: the Arnolfini Portrait, Velasquez’s Las Meninas and Magritte’s paintings.” Antonella Dellepiane Pescetto
Orlando has at its heart an editorial which is inspired by and reinterprets – every single time – a novel, a legend, a pillar of universal culture, translated into images and into a Short Art Movie which imbues and nurtures the style of Orlando.
The story chosen for this issue is: The One Thousand and One Nights, a full-blown celebration of the power of meta-narrative: it was written by more than one author as if it were the creation of a sort of middle-eastern Homer and above all celebrates the figure of Scheherazade, the heroine who saved the women of her people from a tyrant thanks to her powers of storytelling.
The special insert of this issue, made of a different paper than the other used in the rest of the magazine, treasures a wonderful artwork of the artist Luke Edward Hall and an antique illustration of The One Thousand and ne Nights.
In this issue you will discover fascinating interviews to some of the most interesting protagonists on the international scene: the artist and designer Luke Edward Hall, the artist Sergio Roger, the extreme plant artist Azuma Makoto, the volcanic designer Sara Ricciardi, the visionary chef Rasmus Munk of Alchemist restaurant, the eclectic soul of La Double J, JJ Martin, the sensitive artist Marta Abbott and many others.
